Interface was pretty straight forward and at the outputted file’s video/audio quality was top notch. But it turned out this tool was the best for the job on the Mac. I had skipped this initially because it sounded like a tool I’ve tried on Windows which was rather bad. IFlicks looked more like a media manager that made videos compatible with your iDevice, so I skipped that one.įrom the thread, HandBrake was suggested if I wanted to passthrough the video and audio, but I knew I needed to re-encode the audio track, so I skipped this one too. They should probably mention that on their app store. Later I found out their website actually allowed you to download a trial. I looked at iVI next, but it was linked to a $10 app on the app store, and I wasn’t willing to purchase it w/o confirming that it would do the job. Mp4tools failed how to#I selected the tracks I wanted followed by how to encode it, but every configuration I tried errored out with no message or log. I tried Subler next and this one failed hard. I’m pretty sure there’s some options I could pass into it to increase the audio quality, but I decided try some of the other suggestions. Not that it was unrecognizable, but the audio had a much deeper pitch than the original. The video output was flawless, but the audio was all garbled up. The command to run looked easy enough:įfmpeg -i video.mkv -vcodec copy video.mp4 So the first one I tried was FFMpeg, because it was free and I was able to quickly install using HomeBrew. MP4? Despite the topic, there were some really good information on which tools to try: Today I happened to find this thread, which was extremely helpful: Why is it so freaking hard to convert. Audio/Video quality was bad and often times would just fail trying to re-encode the file. On Mac, everything I’ve tried seemed to do a rather poor job. On Windows, I’ve have an arsenal of tools that I used to use (e.g. Mp4tools failed for mac#I’ve been searching for a tool for Mac that can do that job. The only problem is it doesn’t seem to understand MKV files, making it unable to re-encode them. Mp4tools failed 480p#I want something akin to 3-6GB with 6.1 sound. So I’ve been using QuickTime Player to re-encode most videos into 1080p, 720p, and 480p resolutions and that’s been working out great so far. To do DTS 6.1 ES I need MKV files, but not the 20+ GB ones I get from MakeMKV. Handbrake appears to only decode DTS, not encode it. Snakes on a Plane in DTS-ES 6.1 produced a very convincing soundfield of snakes coming out of the back of my room and around my couch. My setup is only 6.1 anyway so losing 1 channel in the 7.1 soundtrack won't matter, but 6.1 is definitely preferable to 5.1 for many films (e.g. Mp4tools failed 720p#I basically want 720p or 1080p re-encoded video with DTS-ES 6.1 soundtracks. I do know from converting my various DTS-ES DVDs that XBMC will play DTS-ES 6.1 discrete soundtracks just fine through XBMC. Is there anything out there that can create a standard DTS-ES 6.1 discrete soundtrack for use with MKVs? In other words, Handbrake will let you re-encode the video so it takes up less space, but to keep 7.1 sound you have to just "pass-through" the DTS-HD soundtrack which is HUGE and may not play correctly on a CrystalHD AppleTV Gen1 in XBMC (just got my card a few days ago and haven't installed it yet). Mp4tools failed mp4#What I can't fathom is why, if QT can play the MP4 audio now why does HB not simply adjust the video to ATV format and leave the audio in tact, it's already working TQVM!!!Īny help much appreciated in case I encounter this again. Typed before I sling the darned laptop out the window!!! HB has never given a problem before but this file is confounding it and me. And, if any of the software is the problem it's instant ditch. Jeez, if I never get a file like this to convert again it'll be too soon!!!!! NEVER again. Still no sound!!!!!Īny help much appreciated as the more I read on this the more options I try, the more files I create all for Handbrake to fail to deliver a file I can play in iTunes or on ATV. So I fire the Mp4 file through Handbrake with the ATV 3 settings. VLC will happily play the original MKV and now QT will happily play the MP4. bearing in mind this is the abridged version after hours wasted on this, I try MP4 tools. Is that the problem I thought? So I try to edit. I load the file into that and notice the audio and the video are in language 'Unknown'. So I read read read read read and try to fathom which of the gazilion software solutions might fix this. I end up with a 4 min audio file and no sound. So, like an idiot, I fire it through Handbrake thinking it'll work. So I have the MKV file and its files are as below in the image. ALL DAY just trying to convert one stupid file!!!!! I'm not sure what it is I hate, handbrake or MKV! Sorry about yet another post on this but I'm really going round in circles here. This is the handiest tool, very simple, but very effective. I have used it since then for many projects that include interface design and user experience. Also, I discovered it as an Intel intern and fell in love with it. I love Balsamiq Mockups License Key and have been doing Balsamiq Mockups Free for over five years.
Users find that it is often convenient to begin with the lasso tool,īut then switch to QuickMask mode for detail work. In” a selection it is not so good for precise definition. The Lasso is often a good tool to use for “roughing You can go outside the edge of the image display and come back The current pointer location to the start location with a straight You release the mouse button, the selection is closed by connecting Mouse button (or, for a stylus, pressing it against the tablet). #MAGIC LASSO GIMP FREE#The Free Selection tool, or Lasso, lets you create a selection byĭrawing it free-hand with the pointer, while holding down the left Enough ranting. If you do a Google search for Lasso Tool in Gimp you will receive a few links and the first link in the search is from GIMP's documentation that shows the Free Selection Tool #MAGIC LASSO GIMP CODE#I'm pretty sure the "killer" open source image editing application isn't going to be the GIMP - although it might use a lot of it's underlying code (which might be okay). I've heard there's big problems with the project, and that development is seriously hampered by in-fights. No, I don't want cryptically named menus, modal dialogs everywhere, everything hidden in right-click, having to click twice to activate menus then select a tool, and the myriad of other stupid irritating interface woes the GIMP suffers from. Usually with the dismissive "you just want it to be like photoshop". The interface is still seriously kludgy - and despite users screaming for a different approach, nothing's been changed. Essential features like CMYK support were so slow in coming (read: many years) most professionals and power users simply wrote it off. I love open source software, and use it wherever I can, but I think the GIMP has been one of open-source's great disaster stories. #MAGIC LASSO GIMP SOFTWARE LICENSE#*GNU = a type of open source software license it has nothing to do with the African savannah. Integration with a tablet can be a little bit of a hassle, but it works pretty flawlessly once you get it running (and I've never tried the same task in Photoshop, so I don't know how it compares in that regard). This sometimes creates a cluttered editing experience, but it's more an annoyance than anything. Finally, the GIMP toolbar and image editing pane open as two separate and discrete windows, rather than as subwindows within a main window (as in versions of Photoshop that I've used). #MAGIC LASSO GIMP PROFESSIONAL#This may pose a problem if you want to send your files to a professional printer, but it should not affect the average user (or the paleontologist who is usually working in grayscale images). For folks who may want to do extremely hard-core editing of color images for later printing, GIMP only supports RGB color formatting (although you can choose colors on the palette using CMYK standards). So are there any downsides to GIMP? Some users may report slow speeds, but this seems to be largely fixed in the more recent versions. There's not much more I can say - GIMP is fantastic! To be perfectly honest, I haven't missed Photoshop at all since making the switch (although I am sure Photoshop "power users" might disagree). Need to remove a black background and replace it with white? No problem. Want to rotate a portion of the image? Easy enough. It has a whole host of very functional tools for selection, touch-up, and flat-out manipulation of images. It is under very active development, and new versions and bug fixes are constantly on their way.Īs a tool for editing photographs destined for publications or presentations, you really can't beat GIMP. The closest commercial equivalent to GIMP is Adobe Photoshop - just like Photoshop, GIMP excels at editing raster images. GIMP is available for Windows, the Mac OS, and Linux. No, this is not an unfortunate slur - it's actually an acronym for "GNU Image Manipulation Program." * And what a program it is! GIMP is one of the most mature and functional open source programs out there, and should be the first choice for anyone looking to do any sort of image editing. I've been developing Project Sparrow as a solo developer over the past 3 years. If you went down for the $2k package you're up to 48% profit. After that you can tack on your $0.25/page and it's all gravy.Īnd, of course, this would be an easy thing to A/B test.Įdit: By the way, if you were willing to buy $500 in InterFax credits up-front (instead of $10 for their smallest package) you could do 10 pages/$0.99 with at least 33% profit. Disregarding marginal costs, that's 50% profit per transaction (assuming you eat the cost of a cover sheet)-at least! 125% profit for three-page faxes. Off the top of my head, though, I'd charge $0.99 for the first five pages. You'd want to do some market research to figure what are the most common page counts. I've never had to fax more than ten pages, so if I went to this site with my 3-6 pages I'd scoff-"Five bucks for three pages? Pffff." But that's me-maybe lots of people need to send 10-15 pages. Personally I think that $0.99-1.99 is the sweet spot, and you should tweak your cost and page counts to match that. I worked on a project very similar to this (and of course the others linked in this thread) for awhile (because I had a need for just such a service), so: 1) Kudos to you, the developer for actually shipping, which I did not do, and 2) I agree with others that you're pricing himself out of the market. So to send 15 pages through InterFax will cost a developer at most $1.65: For some more perspective: InterFax's smallest-and highest cost-per-page package-is $0.11/page. The founders say that they're currently focused on growth, although they expect to be profitable in the second half of next year. Flintobox is a subscription service wherein families receive a "discovery box" every month made up of simple tools and activities. The company has two main offerings: Flintobox and Flintoclass. “The mission of Flinto is to revolutionize the way children around the world learn and play,” says Durairaj. The results were so promising that they all quit their jobs and started Flinto in October 2013. The trio roped in child development experts, game and animation experts and built a beta version that was tested with 60 parents and children. “Since we couldn’t find anyone doing it professionally, we figured that we should probably do it, so that other parents, and children would be benefited along with us.” “We thought it would be a great service if someone could curate new activities and ideas which would engage kids positively, at home, away from the TV, and does not need constant supervision by parents,” says Durairaj, Flinto's chief executive officer. The three of them brainstormed and wanted to see if they could put together toys, activities and books that would help parents. The company's cofounders: Arunprasad Durairaj, 37, Vijaybabu Gandhi, 38, and Shreenidhi SP, 36, who had all worked for Tata Consultancy Services at one point, started Flinto when they realized that their own kids were in need of more intellectually stimulating activities. The arrival of EEG-based headband wearables (current ones include Dreem, Sleepshepherd, and Smartsleep) on the marketplace is a first step (on what is probably still a long road) in the development of comfortable and reliable EEG systems which could be used to record the neural dynamics of sleep across the whole head to create consumer-driven large-scale datasets across different individuals and populations.īut for the moment, the current aim of recently launched EEG headbands such as the Philips Smartsleep, which was unveiled at CES earlier this year, is not to just record and provide feedback on your sleep, but also to improve it. To truly explore and understand sleep in all its complexity, as opposed to just measuring it, you have to use EEG to record a more detailed picture of what is going inside the brain. The sleeping brain displays a rich pattern of continually shifting neural dynamics whose specific function in cognitive and emotional health are yet unexplored. The traditional divisions of sleep stages based on EEG have been challenged by new studies and there is yet no clarity what really constitutes a good night’s sleep. In terms of tracking sleep, particularly for those with sleep issues, the big challenge is that there is yet no clear understanding or gold standard for what to measure against. However, any further interpretation would be overreaching. Essentially these devices can give you a good view of gross aspects of your sleep-wake cycles. Nonethless, the general results of these studies suggest that overall time in bed is pretty accurately estimated by these devices, but on the other hand detection of nighttime wakings was fairly inaccurate. These studies are surprisingly small scale (13 to 25 people) and cover just one night of activity and some included very selective and odd presentation of statistics. Some of these include this recent evaluation of two clinical-grade actiwatches – the GT3X+ and Actiwatch Spectrum as well as an evaluations of the commercial Jawbone UP device with adults and adolescents. There are a growing number of studies that attempt to independently validate their accuracy against multi-parametric polysomnography (PSG) measures which include EEG, EOG (eye movements), EMG (muscle activity) and ECG (heart rhythm). Wearables such as Fitbit, Jawbone (which is now going out of business) and Polar generally sense movement and use these movement patterns (actigraphs) to predict night wakings and stages of sleep. PHILIPS SMARTSLEEP VS DREEM 2 SOFTWAREImproved algorithms, the launch of a Sleep Technology Council by the National Sleep Foundation and an increased availability of high resolution raw data from software platforms such as Fitbit’s Fitabase all help to connect the dots between wearable manufacturers and clinical scientists. And although the majority of these technologies claim that they are not intended for scientific or medical purposes, the gap between them and clinical-grade devices, is rapidly closing. The ability to track an array of physiological, sleep and activity metrics 24 hours a day, 356 days a year, offers the opportunity to combat bad habits, improve health and obtain a level of physical enlightenment beyond our own self report and guesstimation.įrom a research perspective these relatively low-cost technologies offer an unprecedented window into the health and sleep behavior of millions of individuals. Wearable technology is fast becoming the new norm. How accurate are they and what can they really tell you? Most measure sleep based on movement, although new EEG based sleep headbands are hitting the market. Wearable sleep trackers have become ubiquitous.
